Located in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands and islets. It lies 1,050 km northeast of Madagascar and 1,300 km southeast of Somalia. The archipelago covers a total area of 410 km², with the largest island measuring 27 km long and 8 km wide. The Seychelles is the only archipelago in the world composed of granite rock. In fact, 42 of its islands are the result of the formation of this rock in the open sea. Thanks to this characteristic, it boasts a number of heavenly beaches adorned with granite rock.
If you decide to take a luxury cruise in the Seychelles, a tour of the islands one after the other will enable you to make the most of the sites they offer. Mahé is the archipelago's main island. It offers Takamaka beach, a picture-postcard location with white sand on the coast and turquoise-blue water. Located in the southwest of the island, it's the ideal spot for a family picnic. The beach is covered with Takamaka trees, hence the origin of its name. Depending on your preference, you can prepare your lunch at home or sample the delicacies concocted by local restaurants. A number of establishments, such as Chez Batista, offer typical Creole cuisine: chicken curry with pineapple and coconut milk, prawn colombo with coconut milk, and more. A prestige cruise that lets you discover the local flavors.
If you'd prefer to get away from it all, Mahé has the Morne National Park. It's nestled on a hill rising to 930 meters, and can be reached by cutting through the town of Victoria. You'll need to follow marked paths through fields of tea and fruit trees. Once you've reached the heart of the Morne National Park, you can admire the lush greenery and endemic plant species such as orchids. Before leaving Mahé, you can shop at the Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clarke market. Situated in the heart of the Seychelles capital, the market is easily accessible by car. You'll find everything you need to prepare your lunch, from fish to spices, fruit and even flowers. You can also visit the "Rue du Marché" to buy a souvenir made by local craftsmen.
Praslin is an ideal tour to combine with Mahé. This 26 km² island can be reached by boat or plane from Victoria harbor. Once there, you'll have the opportunity to discover the Vallée de Mai, a nature reserve classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In addition to its magnificent beach and rainforest, this island is also well known for its 7,000 cocos de mer. A visit to this park will enable you to discover the black parrots, a rare species of bird found in the Seychelles. A 15-minute boat ride from Praslin takes you to the island of La Digue. It's a tiny 15 m² plot of land, but its beauty is enough to fill you with wonder. La Digue is an island paradise with a unique landscape of granite rocks, coconut palms and clear water. It's the ideal destination if you're looking for peace and quiet. Other hiking activities, including a nature safari, can also be enjoyed on this island. For example, you can climb the Nid d'Aigle, the island's highest mountain at 333 meters. You can also enjoy a full stay on La Digue. Guest houses have been set up in this part of the Seychelles, offering comfortable rooms and meals based on seafood or local produce.
The Seychelles archipelago enjoys a hot, humid tropical climate. The rainy season takes place between October and March. It's warmer at this time of year, and the air is more humid. A cooler season occurs from April to September. Whether during the rainy or the dry season, the Seychelles offer pleasant weather for cruisers. A cooler season runs from April to September.
