Israel is a dream destination for lovers of history and culture. Centuries-old monuments, the legacy of centuries of history, abound in this land of the Near East. On Mount Sinai, where Moses once received the Ten Commandments, stands proudly the monastery of Saint Catherine. This monastery, the oldest in the world still in use, is very well preserved. It houses a museum with a collection of ancient manuscripts from Europe and the Middle East. Here you'll discover, for example, the Latin psalter and the deed by which Mohammed agreed to grant his protection to the monastery.
A visit to Israel inevitably includes Jerusalem, the city that unites all cultures. Take a stroll through the heart of the Old City to visit the Dome of the Rock, the only place of equal importance to all three of the world's great monotheistic religions. For Muslims, this site is where Mohammed went to heaven. For followers of Judaism, it is the most important holy place on earth. Christians see it as the site of the Templun Domini church, the origin of the Templar order.
A stopover in Jerusalem is also an opportunity to brave the Mount of Olives. It's a tough climb, but well worth it. The path is dotted with magnificent churches, including the Pater Noster Church, where the Lord's Prayer is displayed in several long versions. If you're afraid of heights, don't worry: it's not often necessary to climb to the top to experience the wonder of Jerusalem. A bike ride through the maze of stone buildings of Nahla'ot is enough to fill you with wonder. Before leaving Jerusalem, don't miss a visit to the Tomb Garden, the authentic site of Christ's tomb and crucifixion site. Most of the tombs here are beautifully decorated, as many believe that Christ would pass through here on his return to Earth.
Tel Aviv is another not-to-be-missed place in Israel, if only to enjoy the sea on one of its beaches. Here, you'll meet not only bathers, but also unusual characters such as this Elvis look-alike who sings a song in front of your towel. Before leaving Israel, treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the Dead Sea. A mud bath in the world's largest spa will eliminate all toxins from your skin. Don't forget to rinse off thoroughly afterwards, not only to get rid of the mud, but also to remove salt deposits from your skin, as the Dead Sea is very salty.
Israel enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which makes travel possible almost all year round, especially if you plan to stay on the coast. However, if there is a particular season to favor, it would be summer, which runs from April to October. At this time of year, the sun is often out, ideally warming the waters for pleasant bathing. If you're not afraid of the cold or want to slalom down the slopes of Israel's ski resorts, the ideal time to plan your stay is between November and March.
