Saint Lucia, an invitation to relax

If you come to Saint Lucia, it's mainly to enjoy its beaches, the beauty of which is often praised in tourist brochures. Once there, you'll discover that they're much more beautiful in real life. Along the west coast, Reduit Beach and Causeway Beach are the meeting places for beach tourism enthusiasts. If you're looking for a little privacy, leave them for the picturesque beaches of Pigeon Island or Smugglers Cove in the north of the island. On the south coast, beaches like Sandy Beach are often exposed to strong winds, making them particularly attractive to kitesurfers. The beaches on the coast appeal for their wild side. Here, it's not a question of swimming, but rather of contemplating the Atlantic swells frantically breaking on the beach. On Grande Anse beach, you can watch the parade of turtles that come here to lay their eggs.

Beaches are not the only natural riches of Saint Lucia. Of volcanic origin, the island's contrasting landscape is dominated by the Petit Piton and Gros Piton, high peaks that have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1984. At the foot of these majestic pitons, lush vegetation and a lunar landscape add to the island's rugged appearance. As you stroll along the hiking trails, you'll often come across magnificent waterfalls and panoramic views. La Soufrière, a Creole fishing village close to the Pitons, plunges you into a Creole world of bewitching charm.

A stay in Saint Lucia can also become a voyage of discovery. The country is rich in historical vestiges left by the Amerindian peoples, the island's first occupants, and the French and English who fought over the island for many years. Most of these historic vestiges can be found within the Pigeon Island National Landmark. Just outside Castries, the capital, you'll find the military infrastructure that bears witness to the eternal rivalry between the French and the English. At Stonefield Estate, near Soufrière, you'll find petroglyphs dating back to the 4th century BC, indelible traces of the Amerindian era. As you stroll through the towns of Saint Lucia, you'll discover the estates of former settlers. Some, like Fond Doux Holiday Plantation, are still in operation and open their doors to you for a visit. Other colonial houses, still standing the test of time, await you in Soufrière.

The best time to visit Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia enjoys a tropical climate, which means mild temperatures all year round. In all seasons, the thermometer rarely dips below 20°C. Saint Lucia can be visited at any time of year, but the best time to plan your trip is between December and March. That way, you'll escape the dreariness and chill of European winters and have the chance to celebrate the festive season under the tropical sun. If you don't want to miss out on the fun of the Castries Carnival, come to Saint Lucia in July.
