What to see in Sweden?

The best way to discover Sweden is to visit the Stockholm Archipelago, a microcosm of 24,000 islands and islets that serves as the country's capital. In this Venice of the North, you'll enjoy boat trips from island to island, sharing the Swedes' love of the sea and outdoor life. Among Stockholm's islands, Djurgården is a must, especially if you want to discover traditional Sweden. The Skansen open-air museum lets you discover Sweden's past. Farms, stores, a royal hunting ground - everything has been designed to bring history to life. You can even play woodcutter by cutting wood the old-fashioned way, with the help of a lumberjack. After reliving the past, immerse yourself in the present with a stroll through Stockholm's trendiest district, Sofo. Every last Thursday of the month, the district comes alive until the end of the night. To discover authentic Sweden, where man and nature live in harmony, head for Fårö. Set against a backdrop of pine forests and limestone pillars, Fårö is a haven of peace and relaxation. After Farö, head for the Bohuslän coast, to visit the wooden villages that sit proudly on majestic granite islands.

But a trip to Sweden wouldn't be complete without a stopover in Abisko National Park. Just like the others before you, let yourself be seduced by this vast expanse of arid, icy land where human presence seems almost non-existent. While you're there, take a ride on a dog sled, the preferred means of transport for northerners. This ride will take you to traces of Sami culture, such as the sacrificial site overlooking the park from the top of Lapporten, the U-shaped mountain.

To enhance your stay in Sweden, there's nothing better than a gourmet interlude in one of Stockholm's restaurants. You'll have the opportunity to appreciate Swedish cuisine, with its emphasis on seafood and smoked fish. If you visit during the summer, you'll have the chance to take part in crayfish evenings, which mark the end of the fine weather. To celebrate the end of summer, Swedes often gather outside, around a table lit by lanterns, to enjoy crayfish.

The best time to discover Sweden

As in all Nordic countries, winter is harsh in Sweden. To make the most of the sunshine, it's best to wait until the warm weather arrives to plan your stay in this country. The period from the end of May to the end of July is therefore perfect for a vacation in Sweden. Note, however, that if you want to go camping, you'll have to wait until summer, i.e. July, to leave for Sweden. In fact, most campgrounds are closed to the public outside the summer season.
