With the Costa Smeralda launched in 2019, Costa Cruises has taken a major step forward by adopting liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its fuel, paving the way for cleaner shipping thanks to a significant reduction in atmospheric emissions. An eco-responsible ship, the Costa Smeralda also features a desalination system for water production and eco-efficient LED lights.
The Costa Smeralda perfectly illustrates the fusion of modernity and tradition, echoing the best of Italian design. The design of the Costa Smeralda was entrusted to the team of New York designer Adam Tihany. Every space on board is a tribute to Italy's rich culture and history, from deck names inspired by Italian cities to public spaces reminiscent of the famous piazzas.
Costa Cruises is one of the first cruise lines to introduce liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion in 2019 with the Costa Smeralda. LNG propulsion significantly reduces the ship's emissions of sulfur dioxide and fine particles, with a reduction of up to 32%. LNG is a compact form of natural gas, made liquid by cooling, which optimizes storage and transport, contributing to a greener approach.
In addition to using LNG, the Costa Smeralda incorporates advanced technologies to reduce its environmental impact. She is equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system called a scrubber, which filters out fine particles and a variety of air pollutants before they are released into the air. It is also equipped with a shore power system, enabling it to connect to shore power while docked, thus reducing emissions. Costa also places great emphasis on advanced wastewater treatment, and adopts practices to reduce, recycle and reclaim daily waste on board the Costa Smeralda.
The Costa Smeralda offers a diverse cruising experience with its 2612 comfortable cabins accommodating up to 6554 passengers. The different cabin types are designed to suit a variety of preferences and budgets, from economical interior cabins to high-end suites. All feature modern amenities to enrich your voyage at sea.
Inside cabins are up to 161 sq ft and feature a double or twin bed, shelving, desk, safe, flat-screen TV, telephone and bathroom with shower and hairdryer. They also feature air conditioning. Interior cabins are modernly decorated, with designer touches and original works of art.
Outside cabins offer more space (up to 248 sq ft) and the same amenities as inside cabins. The main difference is the presence of a large window, allowing passengers to enjoy the ocean view from their cabin.
Balcony cabins feature 205 sq ft of living space, complemented by a 43 sq ft balcony for outdoor relaxation. Terrace cabins, also 205 sq ft, feature a splendid 86 sq ft terrace overlooking the ocean, complemented by a bright veranda. These cabins are furnished with one double or two single beds, a desk, a sitting area with sofa, and a modern bathroom with shower and hairdryer.
Suites are equipped with the finest amenities and services for a comfortable, upscale onboard experience, including a large private balcony, bathroom with hydromassage shower and bath products, bathrobes and slippers. They offer a surface area of up to 355 sq ft. A personal butler service is available daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. to unpack luggage and organize reservations. Another advantage of the suites is that you can enjoy breakfast and dinner in the privacy of your cabin. A bottle of sparkling wine is offered on arrival.
The Costa Smeralda offers some twenty bars and lounges designed to suit all tastes, guaranteeing relaxation and conviviality. Passengers can enjoy a wide range of beverages, including Italian cocktails and wines, in spaces of modern, elegant design. The Spritz Bar, Campari Bar and Spazio Bollicine offer a convivial atmosphere evocative of Italy. The Solemio Spa, located on board the Costa Smeralda, houses a vast thalassotherapy and balneotherapy area and offers a wide choice of beauty and wellness treatments for complete relaxation.
