MSC World Europa is equipped with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion system, which helps to significantly reduce environmental impact. LNG propulsion reduces CO² emissions by 25% and drastically cuts sulfur emissions, nitrogen oxides, and fine particles. The ease of transporting LNG also contributes to reducing polluting emissions.
In addition to LNG propulsion, MSC World Europa is equipped with several technologies to reduce atmospheric emissions. It is fitted with scrubbers, devices that clean exhaust gases to eliminate sulfur oxides, and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90%. Shore power allows the ship to connect to the port’s electrical infrastructure, reducing engine use and emissions when docked.
MSC World Europa is equipped with several features to optimize its energy performance. These include smart ventilation and air conditioning systems with energy recovery, and LED lighting controlled by intelligent management systems. The ship’s innovative hull shape is specifically designed to minimize drag in the water, improving energy efficiency by 47% compared to International Maritime Organization standards.
MSC Cruises has implemented a strict waste management system on board its ships, including waste reduction, sorting, and recycling. Waste is separated at the source into different categories, such as recyclables and food waste, for efficient processing. Every ship in the fleet has an environmental compliance officer to ensure adherence to international and local regulations. Moreover, the company has committed to eliminating single-use plastics on its vessels.
