Seine River cruise: a guide to choosing the right one

A Seine River cruise connects Paris and Normandy at a leisurely pace, taking in Parisian landmarks, river bends, Impressionist villages, and towering cliffs overlooking the English Channel.

The journey may begin along the capital's riverbanks, pass through landscapes immortalized at Giverny and Rouen, then continue to Honfleur, Étretat, or the D-Day beaches, depending on the itinerary. It is an accessible, culturally rich, and scenic cruise where every stop offers a new perspective on the history, art, and landscapes of northern France.

Tips for choosing your Seine River cruise

1. Choose your region

  • Paris and its river bends : Ideal for combining historic riverbanks, museums, landmarks, cruising through the city, and easy departures from the capital.
  • The Impressionist Seine : Giverny, Vernon, Les Andelys, and La Roche-Guyon bring together gardens, villages, castles, and landscapes immortalized by painters.
  • Rouen and the Normandy valley : A more heritage-focused area, with a cathedral, half-timbered houses, abbeys, cider routes, and medieval history.
  • Honfleur, the Côte Fleurie, and D-Day : A maritime and historic extension to the old harbor, the cliffs of Étretat, seaside resorts, and the beaches of 1944.

2. Choose your style

  • French-language and cultural cruises : CroisiEurope is particularly well suited to the Seine, with French-speaking hosts, comfortable cruising, classic excursions, and a friendly atmosphere.
  • Escorted heritage journeys : Rivages du Monde or Voyages d’Exception may suit travelers who want more cultural programming, lectures, and in-depth tours.
  • Premium comfort : AMA Waterways or Luftner Cruises may be appealing depending on the itinerary, with well-appointed ships, a more relaxed pace, and careful attention to each port.

What our guests loved

Must-see highlights of a Seine River cruise

Sailing from Paris into the Normandy countryside

Travelers enjoy sensing the gradual transition from the city to lush countryside along the river's bends and then the estuary. The Seine gives the journey a pleasing continuity, with landscapes that evolve seamlessly.

Rediscovering Giverny and Monet's world

Monet's gardens make a lasting impression with their colors, reflections, and direct connection to Impressionism. It is a wonderfully evocative stop that pairs easily with Vernon or nearby villages.

Discovering Rouen, then Honfleur

Rouen offers rich history, while Honfleur brings gentle seaside charm. Together, these two stops give the cruise a truly Norman character.

Hidden gems off the beaten path

Climbing to Château Gaillard in Les Andelys

The climb offers one of the finest views of the winding Seine. Travelers discover a more scenic and less expected experience than the major city tours.

Lingering in the lanes of La Roche-Guyon

The village blends cliffs, a castle, a kitchen garden, and old houses in a wonderfully peaceful setting. This stop presents a more intimate side of the valley than its best-known sites.

Seeing Honfleur's old harbor early in the morning

Before the day grows busy, the façades and boats reflect in the water in soft morning light. This simple moment captures all the portside charm of the stop.

Learn more about your Seine cruise

The Seine through history

Looking for a change of scenery?

Take a cruise along the Seine River in the heart of France. This 777-kilometer-long river meanders from its source in the Côte d'Or region to its mouth in the English Channel at Honfleur in Calvados. The Seine takes you on a voyage of discovery of the historic sites, cultural sights and natural beauty that line its banks. With its magnificent landscapes, the river has always inspired artists. Painted by the illustrious Pierre-Auguste Renoir in the late 19th century, recounted by Honoré de Balzac and Gustave Flaubert, the Seine was also sung by Jacques Prévert in the 20th century.

If the Seine is part of the history of the painters and poets of recent centuries, the history of navigation on the river goes back much further. The Seine already played an important role in river trade in Gallo-Roman times. The story of the Vikings is another chapter in the history of the Seine. In 855, the Vikings launched expeditions down the river before storming Paris. Viking artefacts, including jewelry, coins and Thor's hammers, have been found in the Seine, attesting to their passage. Some of these relics are now on display at the Musée des Antiquités Nationales in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Others are kept at the Rouen antiquities museum. Development work on the Seine began in 1850, improving navigation, which until then had been perilous.

A gentle crossing between Côte d'Or and Calvados

A cruise on the Seine takes you through the splendid natural regions of Burgundy and Champagne Ardenne. You'll also discover the natural and cultural wonders of the Île de France region, and explore the highlights of Haute-Normandie along the way. The Seine offers a host of itineraries that combine nature and culture in the Vallée de la Seine, one of the many Seine cruise routes. You can also enjoy moments of relaxation during stopovers on the Côte Fleurie. Paris is one of the most beautiful stops on a Seine cruise. With its unique atmosphere in sunlight, Paris is magnified by night-time illuminations. During the cruise, discover or rediscover the emblematic monuments of the City of Light: the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides, Notre-Dame and the Louvre.

The stretch between Paris and Honfleur remains the best navigable part of the Seine. Embark from the French capital or from Normandy and enjoy a leisurely cruise along the Seine, discovering France at every port of call. Big cities alternate with picturesque villages, ports with verdant shores. These striking contrasts are what give the Seine its charm. Rouen, a land of history, is one of the must-see stops on this cruise. Known as the city of a hundred steeples, Rouen is home to an important historical site: the Place du Vieux Marché, the very spot where Joan of Arc was burned alive. Further upstream, the small town of Les Andelys, overlooked by its old castle, has an enchanting bucolic character, with a succession of half-timbered houses lining the Seine. Your trip will also take you to Honfleur, gateway to the English Channel.

The best time to embark on a Seine cruise

You can enjoy a cruise on the Seine almost all year round. Nevertheless, spring remains the best time to take full advantage of this expedition. From March onwards, nature wakes up. Lush vegetation in full bloom enhances the river's shores. Nature lovers will be happy to punctuate their stopovers with hikes and green walks to complete the cruise. On the right bank of the Seine, for example, Mantes-la-Jolie invites you to enjoy a stroll along the forest paths of the Bois de la Butte-Verte in Marne-la-Vallée. For cruises coupled with seaside pleasures in Calvados, the summer season is ideal. After a coastal stroll at the foot of the Fécamp cliffs, take advantage of the fine weather to enjoy swimming, lounging and the pleasures of the sea on the eponymous beach.

Throughout this cruise on the Seine, your trip will be punctuated by gourmet interludes. In addition to lunches and dinners on board, each stopover will be an opportunity to discover a range of local flavors. As for the major cities, they offer the promise of culinary discoveries in the various restaurants. From the restaurants along the Seine in Paris to those in the port of Honfleur, you're sure to have a wonderful taste experience. However, to add a touch of authenticity to your cruise on the Seine, let yourself be tempted by gourmet moments in the traditional guinguettes lining the river, such as the one at the Hôtel Saint James in Paris.
