Cruises from Longyearbyen 2026 - 2027

- Geography - location and attractions

Located in the heart of the Arctic Ocean, the port of Longyearbyen is a favorite destination for cruise ships. Located in northern Norway, Longyearbyen is one of the treasures of the Svalbard archipelago. It is one of the most northerly towns in the world. It was founded on the island of Spitsbergen by American businessman John Munro Longyear in 1906. Situated on the southern shore of the Adventfjorden valley, the town is surrounded by coal mines, as coal mining was once the island's main activity. Today, only mine no. 7 is still active. However, it is possible to visit the interior of some of these mines. The Adventfjorden valley, meanwhile, is a meeting place for hiking enthusiasts, and the surrounding icy waters can be explored by canoe.

Learn more about Longyearbyen

- Places to visit and things to do

The mining infrastructure is an integral part of Longyearbyen's cultural heritage. During a walk in the town's heights, make a detour to Mine No. 3. Although the mine ceased operations in 1996, it is still possible to explore. Discovered in 1928, this mine produced some 160,000 tonnes of coal every year. Further down, in the center of town, stands a monument to the archipelago's miners. You can also admire a statue of one of these workers. Take a stroll through the town's streets, lined with picturesque houses. The houses are brightly painted and built of wood. If you're lucky, you'll come across some wild reindeer along the way. In April, take part in the Svalbard Ski Marathon. It's the perfect opportunity to explore the vast snow-covered expanses around the town of Longyearbyen. During the race, it's possible to spot polar bears in the wild. Rest assured, armed guards will accompany you on your journey. Enjoy a pleasant stroll through the Adventfjorden fjord. Located to the east of the city, this peaceful valley is the result of the melting of an ancient glacier known as Adventdalen.
