Before you embark on your cruise to contemplate the riches of New Orleans, take a stroll through the historic Vieux Carré or "French Quarter". Completely renovated in 1976 from a former warehouse district, it is now home to some 25 art galleries, museums and artists' studios open to the public. A stroll along Garden District Avenue under the shady lanes, set against a backdrop of attractive mansions in distinct architectural styles, is also a must. Visit the Mardi Gras Museum to learn more about the origins and history of Carnival. A nice piece of King Cake will round off your visit to the museum.
