Bridgetown, the Barbadian capital nicknamed "Little England", lies in the south-east of the West Indies, on the vast Carlisle Bay at the south-western tip of Barbados. Indeed, the region was declared a British colony in the 17th century, which explains the influence of neo-Gothic architectural styles on most of the city's monuments and heritage sites. Bridgetown is a vibrant city, with its beaches and shops, as well as the various cultural events held in the city several times a year, livening up the streets. The lush natural surroundings make for pleasant excursions, such as the Harrison Cave on the coast. After this visit, the long stretches of fine sand and beautiful waves of Crane and Bathsheba await you. Diving enthusiasts can head south of downtown to Carlisle Bay Marine Park and explore two old shipwrecks. Nearby is Pebbes Beach, a beautiful spot that invites you to swim in calm waters lined with white sand.

In the historic Garisson district on the outskirts of Bridgetown is the Barbados Museum. Housed in a former military prison, it boasts a wide range of geological, historical and decorative art collections, as well as rooms devoted to the island's marine flora and fauna. Nearby, within the garrison walls, a visit to George Washington's Gregorian-style mansion is a must, Bridgetown being the only city on the North American continent to have been visited by the president. Don't miss the Barbados National Arms Depot, with its massive collection of 17th-century iron cannons. In the outer part of this historic center is the Garrison Savannah, a racecourse that has been in operation for over a century and a half. On the outskirts of town, learn more about Barbados' past with a visit to the Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill Plantation and the Tyrol Cot Heritage Village, a successful replica of a 19th-century Barbadian town.
