Discovering the Czech Republic begins with Prague, its capital. Golden city for some, city of a hundred steeples for others, mother of all cities for some, Prague has many eulogistic nicknames. Once you've strolled the winding streets that lead to Old Town Square, you'll see that Prague is more than worthy of all these accolades. The area is home to many architectural marvels, including the Church of Our Lady of Tiýn with its stunning Gothic spires, the old buildings with their facades adorned with lyrical frescoes and the Astronomical Clock. Prague isn't just a pile of old stones, it's also a dynamic city that loves to party. During the annual Off Festival in Malá Strana, the city becomes a mecca for music and theater. For seven days, artists from all over the world take to the stage to perform original shows.
Just outside Prague lies Kutná Hora, a charming medieval town where time seems to stand still. After visiting the centuries-old cathedral, enjoy a pint of local beer with a plate of knedlíky in one of the city's many old-fashioned hospody pubs. In Slavonice, another of the Czech Republic's centuries-old towns, you'll find other architectural wonders, such as houses with 17th-century facades adorned with sgraffito. While you're here, take the opportunity to sample the town's chocolate, reputed to be among the best in the country.
A trip to the Czech Republic is not complete without a visit to Bohemia, a green setting for relaxation. A mountain range classified as a biosphere reserve, Sumava offers off-the-beaten-track hiking among fields of hops. Situated in the heart of a lush valley, Marianké Lazné invites you to enjoy the benefits of its thermal springs. Like all towns in the Czech Republic, the city is also renowned for its rich architectural heritage. Here, Art Nouveau buildings stand side by side with eclectic
The Czech Republic enjoys a temperate continental climate with distinct seasons. The destination can be visited almost all year round, but the best time to enjoy the beauty of the landscape is between May and September. At this time of year, all the conditions are in place to make your stay unforgettable. The sun is often out and the thermometer often fluctuates between 15 and 25°C, gently warming the atmosphere. Occasional showers cool the air. As they never last very long, they won't put a damper on your cross-country excursions. However, if you want to escape the holiday crowds, it's best to plan your trip a little earlier, in April, or later, in October. During this period, the number of visitors to interesting sites is low, and you'll have no trouble booking your dream hotel.
