Where to go in Switzerland?
If you're visiting Switzerland for the first time, start your discovery of the country with a visit to Geneva. This city on the shores of Lake Geneva can be visited in a variety of ways. Take a boat trip, a cable car ride or a walk - the choice is yours. A truly international city, Geneva, rightly nicknamed the capital of diplomacy, is home to the headquarters of almost 200 international organizations. They're well worth a visit, but the real wealth of Geneva lies in the heart of the old town, where you'll discover the symbols of the city's flourishing past. St. Peter's Cathedral, with its blend of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, and the former Roman forum, converted into a market square in the Middle Ages, are just some of the highlights of this historic site. If culture is your passion, visit the Musée d'art et d'histoire, with its extensive collection of paintings, weapons and sculptures. The Musée de l'Horlogerie and the Musée des Instruments de Musique Anciens are also well worth a visit.
After Geneva, continue your discovery of Switzerland with a visit to Zurich, a city with a glorious past. Among the maze of Zurich's pedestrian streets, you'll come across mansions dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries that have stood the test of time. You'll also pass squares adorned with numerous fountains. Along Bahnhofstrasse, you'll find a succession of luxury boutiques and banks, but in between are unexpected treasures such as this 13th-century bell tower, the largest in Europe. In the neighboring Fraumünster avenue, you'll discover a choir decorated with magnificent stained-glass windows created in 1970 by Marc Chagall, when he was 83 years old! Before leaving Zurich for further discoveries, pay a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, where a rich collection representing the various artistic movements from the Renaissance to the present day is on display throughout the year. To round off your stay in Switzerland with a relaxing break, head to Lucerne, the country's main resort. With its picture-postcard backdrop of craggy peaks, Alpine villages and grazing meadows, Lucerne conveys the image of the real Switzerland: picturesque and authentic.
Switzerland, an ideal year-round destination
Switzerland can be visited in any season. In winter, from late November to April, the resorts of Zermatt and others open their doors to welcome ski enthusiasts from all over the world. In summer, between June and September, many holidaymakers come to Switzerland to add another dimension to their vacation in the sun. If you're looking for a bit of peace and quiet, then move your holiday to October, or bring it forward to May.
