Your first stop on your visit to Tanzania is Dar es Salaam. Meaning "haven of peace" in Arabic, it is the economic center and former capital of the country. Here, you'll discover religious monuments such as the Hindu Temples, the Lutheran Cathedral and the Catholic Church of St. Peter. You'll also have the chance to visit the national museum and its botanical garden, or the Karibu art gallery. On the mainland, you can listen to the stories of the Maasai tribes and explore Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, a still-active volcano rising to 5,895 meters. The majority of our safaris take place in this region, between the shores of Lake Victoria and the town of Arusha.
The next stop is the Serengeti, one of the world's largest protected ecosystems, covering 25,000 km2. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's the ideal place to discover the king of animals: lion, giraffe, cheetah and leopard, zebra, wildebeest, ostrich and rhinoceros. You'll also see a whole colony of elephants. It is also home to the Great Migration: a spectacle you absolutely must capture. You can also pass through the Ngorongoro Crater to see Masai warriors grazing their herds with their spears at the region's only waterhole: Lake Magadi. Hyenas, cheetahs, antelopes, rhinoceroses and servals can all be seen here. You can also discover the Tarangire Park, made up of bushes, baobabs and acacias.
With a plain, plenty of greenery and hills, you'll find oryx, gerenuk and, with a bit of luck, wild dogs. There are also many other national parks within easy reach, including Katavi Park near Lake Tanganyiaka and Mikumi Park between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma. As you approach the shores of the Indian Ocean, you'll find yourself in a completely different world: white sandy beaches for idlers, tropical vegetation and coconut and banana trees. The Zanzibar archipelago will welcome you with open arms to discover its welcoming people and their way of life. To round off your stay, set off to conquer Stone Town, with its labyrinth of narrow streets, fortresses and cathedrals. Last but not least, don't forget to sample the local cuisine, which includes pilau, kachumbari, samoussa and mkate wa kumi mina.
The best time to visit Tanzania is during July and August. You'll enjoy a cool climate, sunny and above all dry days. Of course, you can also go in June, provided you bring a pair of rain boots or a raincoat. If you want to go in winter (June to August), pack light clothes, and a small scarf or jacket for cooler evenings. Would you prefer to go in summer, from December to February? You'll also want to pack light clothes, a raincoat and an umbrella. And if you're feeling peckish, stop off at the Tembo Hotel restaurant to sample its culinary specialties while enjoying the fine weather. Book your ticket now for a safari in the country or a relaxing day on the beach.
