Located in the east of the Asian continent, China is bordered by Mongolia to the north, Vietnam and Burma to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the east and Tibet to the west. With a surface area of 9,596,961 km², it is one of the world's largest countries. As a result, this global economic powerhouse boasts countless riches and a wide range of destinations for visitors to discover.
From China's historic capital, Beijing, to Shanghai, China's most modern city, to Xian, the cradle of Chinese civilization, to Guilin and its lush natural beauty, everything is awe-inspiring. These profiles of China are invitations to discovery and adventure.
Civilization is one of the strong points of this Asian country. Indeed, the country's history has left many traces, which explains why it is home to a number of historical and cultural monuments well worth a visit during a stay in China. The Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, the Imperial City of Xi'an, the Longmen Caves and the Royal Palace of Potala are the main emblematic sites of the Middle Kingdom.
Beijing, also known as the Chinese megalopolis, is the number-one destination for foreign tourists on a trip to China. It fascinates visitors with the diversity of its historic and modern sites. Indeed, the metropolis is home to some of the most important relics of China's imperial past, including the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall of China and the great Tiananmen Square.
The Forbidden City was the palace of China's emperors in the 15th century, during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Located in the heart of Beijing, it now houses a museum displaying art and culture from Chinese history.
Located in the heart of Xuanwu, a historic district of Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is both a historical and cultural monument of China. It is the place where emperors celebrated rites and made sacrifices to pay homage and implore Heaven to provide good harvests. The circular altar, the Echo Wall, the Imperial Celestial Vault, the Temple of Fasting and the Cypress of the Nine Dragons outside, and the natural history museum displaying dinosaur skeletons are the main sites to visit.
The 6,700 km-long Great Wall of China, one of the country's most iconic landmarks, is an ideal site for hiking and enjoying panoramic views of the Chinese landscape. The most visited stretches are in the vicinity of Beijing, such as Badaling.
Tiananmen Square is not only the largest city-center square in the world, it is also synonymous with the grandeur of the Middle Kingdom. It is considered the Gateway to Heavenly Peace. It was here that Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China, raising the first flag of the new Middle Kingdom. National celebrations are also held here today.
Tourists are advised to visit China in autumn, from September to October, and in spring, from April to June. Temperatures are actually milder during these two periods, hovering around 20 and 25°C, and there is less precipitation throughout the country.
Autumn is also a season rich in festivals throughout China, including the National Day Festival on October 1, the Shaolin Kung Fu Festival and the Canton Fair on October 15. A trip during this period is therefore an opportunity to better appreciate Chinese culture.
China is also known the world over for its rich and succulent gastronomy. What could be more original than savoring the country's emblematic gastronomic specialties on the spot? Tasting Beijing's famous Peking duck, Baozi, steamed bites, biang biang noodles or Da Zha crab in a Beijing restaurant such as Tiandi Yijia is an enriching experience, especially for the taste buds.
